Jack Russell Dogs are tough little terriers and working dogs that originating in England. They are not the same as parson russell terriers, those are mainly for show and rarely seen hunting. A JRT (Jack Russell Terrier) must be over 51% white and can have black and tan spots found mainly around the face and the tail’s base. The undercoat should have a pattern of small brown and black spots that can’t be seen on the outer coat. A Jack Russell Terrier’s ears should fold downward and they have very strong teeth.

Jack Russell Terriers have three different coats, smooth, rough, and broken. The coat should not be soft but rather dense.

Jack Russell’s tails are held upright high and straight. Most breeders have the tails docked to about 5 inches which is about the length of a hand grip. Leaving a JRT’s tail a little long is acceptable, but it too short will make the dog look poorly balanced.

You should begin basic training when your jack russell puppy becomes 3 months old.

Puppies love routines, so routines so you should start with that. He should know what time to go to sleep / wake up, when to eat (jack russell puppies should eat 2 - 3 times daily), where his food and water dishes are and where his bed is. Your jack russell shouldn’t be table feed or sleep on your dog (dominate issuses could occur when he gets older).

You need to correct your jrt puppy when he does something wrong. Use words like “no!”, “ah-ah!”, or “stop!” but with a calm voice, no yelling or getting angry! Praise him / her when they behave good, use words like “good!” or “Yay!”.

Crate training is not necessary, but does help with house breaking. He should stay quitely in this crate at night or during the day when you’re not around. They should NOT be left in a crate for more then a few hours during the day. Jack russell terriers have a high energy level, so make sure you bring them on a long talk (45 minute minimum) before placing them in the crate!

Housing breaking at a early age should be done. Praise when he goes to the bathroom outside and correct him when he goes inside. Never hit or get to mad at your puppy when he goes inside the house, staying calm will speed up the housing breaking process. After a month or two, they should be fully house broken.

Once your jack / parson russell terrier is 3 - 6 months old, you should start slightly advanced training. Things like sit, down, stay. No jumping up at people, No barking / biting or nipping people either. He should be taught to walk nice on the leash and not to pull. He needs to come when you call his / her name. Make sure you correct your jack russell if you notice aggression towards other people or dogs, too.

There are tons of training and trick tips to make things easier and to speed things up. I’ll be writing articles on training and how to teach your jack russell dog how to sit, stay, come, paw and etc.

So, you’ve found a reputable breeder and are ready to buy a jack russell terrier? There are some things you should consider before buying a JRT puppy. They need a lot of attention so it wouldn’t be wise to buy or adopt a jack russell if you’re expecting a new baby or have small children in the house at all times.

Full time job? Are you working full time? Your little puppy will need lots of attention and should be socialized with other humans and other dogs, so make sure you have the time. Leaving them alone during the day without exercise will result in them chewing and tearing anything they can sink their teeth it (trust me, I know from experience).

Budget. Sure, Jack Russell Terriers seem to be affordable, but don’t forget the other expenses. Your new jack russell puppy will need to be trained and should be trained by a professional if you’re not experienced. You don’t want to feed your new puppy table food so you’ll need to buy dog food made for this breed. They needs lots of toys and treats… treats to make training easier and toys so they don’t get bored well your away for a few hours or can’t pay attention to them for whatever reasons.

Taking the dog to the vet. All dog’s need to be brought to the vet once you get them so they can be checked for viruses, infections and other problems. You’ll also have to bring him or her to the vet a few times a year when younger so they can get their vaccinations and be checked for health problems. You should check out the sites below for information on canine anal glands and urinary tract and bladder infections you pet could get:

The Jack Russell Terrier is a working terrier. They were breed to be excellent diggers and be very vocal. Why? These terriers would chase after prey and usually follow them underground (digging) and when barking, the hunters would be able to locate the dog and prey easier.

Not only Jack Russell Terrier is not only a high energy, protective and fearless but also very smart.

Jack Russell terriers are not for everyone. They are anything but lap dogs and require a lot of attention. They also need lots of exercise, not just physically but mentally too.

What happens when a JRT is not properly exercised and not trained properly? Many things including hard to manage behavior, digging in unwanted areas, escaping from the yard, and what seems like never ending barking. Most people just give up with this breed and abandon them (ever wondered why there are quite a few jack russell shelters?) after so long, so before even thinking about buying one, make sure you’ll be able to give them the exercise they need.

Have a smaller child? Jack Russell Terriers usually get along find with small children as long as they are taught not to strike or tease them. Unlike other breeds, a jack russell terrier won’t put up with constant abuse such as tail and ear pulling from a child. They usually get along fine with other pets but same-sex aggression can be a problem, especially in males. They are put in dangerous situations with other larger dogs, why? The JRT think they are bigger then they really are and are fearless so they won’t back down from other dogs, no matter how big or small.

A jack russell terrier should never be left alone with small children and especially cats or other small pets.. it’s pretty obvious why, being they are hunting dogs and all.
